Google has started testing a significant update to its mobile search experience that connects AI Overviews with its AI Mode. This way, users can switch between the two without leaving the results page. According to the company, the test is going global on mobile devices
Robby Stein, VP Product, announced on X. "This update brings Google closer to its vision for Search, allowing users to ask anything, no matter how long or complex, without worrying about where or how to phrase their queries."
What’s Changed?
Until now, AI Overviews and AI Mode functioned separately; however, the test brings a significant change in this scenario. You will always open AI Overviews first for a particular query. Now, when you tap “Show more” or ask follow-up questions, it opens directly in AI Mode.
Google explains, the result is a smooth blend: quick snapshots whenever needed and deeper conversational answers when desired.
The Bigger Idea Behind This Move
This new trail confirms that Google is keen on integrating its AI search experience into a single interface. However, this way, user activity will stay in the AI generated responses rather than the traditional search, raising concerns among website owners and publishers already worried about AI overviews reducing the CTR (click through rates). According to research, users who see AI summaries are less likely to visit external sites.
Alongside AI mode in search, users stay within Google’s ecosystem. There’s no confirmation yet regarding the timeline for further expansion of the feature. The company runs tests for several months to make the feature widely available.
