      Google AI headline rewrites test

Google is Testing AI Headlines to Replace Original and Traditional Titles from Search

Google is testing AI-generated headline rewrites in Search, a move that could change how news stories and webpages appear in the world’s most used search engine. The tech leader says the experiment is “small and narrow” for now, but it is already raising fresh concerns among publishers because Google can replace the headlines they write with ones it generates.

Google’s experiment with AI headlines applies to traditional Search results, not just Google Discover. As the firm confirms, it is trying out rewritten titles that it believes better match a user’s query and improve engagement with web content.

The step indicates that a story can show up in Search with a different headline than the one on the publisher’s site, sometimes with a shorter tone or a changed emphasis.

How the AI Headlines in Search Works?

According to Google’s explanation to The Verge, the system looks for content on a page that could serve as a useful and relevant title for a search query. In practice, that can mean replacing a long or playful publisher headline with a more direct version.

The Verge reported examples of Google shortening headlines and slightly altering their meaning, while Search Engine Land said the test is not limited to news sites and is still not approved for broader release.

Why Google is Testing AI Headlines?

AI headlines are not Google’s first headline experiment. In Discover, the company first described AI-generated titles as a small UI test, then later reclassified them as a feature after saying the change performed well for user satisfaction.

Google is now reportedly using similar language for the Search test, which is why researchers are treating it as a possible sign of a wider rollout later.

Editors argue that headlines are part of the story, not just a label. They have already seen multiple rewritten headlines over the past few months, with no disclosure that Google had changed them.

Google has not disclosed when, or whether, the AI headline test might become a wider Search feature. It is a narrow experiment as of now. For publishers, though, it is a warning that title control may be getting less certain inside Search.
