The Apps SDK is now available in preview. It runs on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which is in fact an open standard which allows ChatGPT to be interoperable with external tools and data sources.
Among the notable features is the fact that OpenAI has ensured that the SDK is entirely open source, and apps can be run in any location. The developers can now build-up the logic and interface of their apps and combine it with their backends and even allow users to sign in or get access to premium features.

Applications can fit naturally into your chats:
- You can “invoke an app by name, e.g, “Spotify, make a playlist for my party this Friday.”
- When talking about purchasing a new home, ChatGPT can suggest interesting apps such as Zillow on its own.
- The applications integrate interactive features, that may be maps, playlists, or slides.

Security First Approach
Regarding safety and privacy, OpenAI is at the forefront. It requires developers to include a transparent privacy policy, collect less data, and follow the guidelines. Users will always be given a command before connecting to an app, assuring control over shared data.
This year, OpenAI will start accepting submissions for publication and review, with plans to introduce monetization options through the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), which allows paid apps in ChatGPT.
