Android’s Play Store is a widely used platform for installing apps. But users often end up downloading apps from untrusted sources, putting themselves at risk. So, now Google has marked an end to this issue!
Google has started rolling out Android developer verification to all developers through the Play Console and Android Developer Console. Google aims to boost Android security to keep it safe and open. This verification makes it simple for developers to confirm their verification and register apps before the changes are seen.
On Android devices, app distribution is supported through sideloading, a central Android feature that allows installing apps from sources other than the Google Play Store. As stated by Matthew Forsythe, Director Product Management, Android App Safety, “As an extra layer of security, we are rolling out Android developer verification to help prevent malicious actors from hiding behind anonymity to spread harm repeatedly.”
What’s New with Android Developer Verification?
Android Developer Verification allows developers to now verify identity and apps with Google, enabling users to sideload applications outside the Play Store. If you are using Google Play and verified via the Play Console, it will be registered automatically. Integration with Android Studio will allow developers to view their verification status directly within the IDE.
For most users, installing apps remains the same. The update mainly focuses on cases where users try to install an unregistered app or one that requires ADB or an advanced flow. Verified apps will have a safe alternative, whereas unregistered apps will face additional security measures.
Flexible Options Tailored to Users’ Needs
Google is working to improve the verification experience based on your feedback. It introduces flexible options for different users.
- Android Studio Developers: The app registration status will be visible in Android Studio in the next two months.
- Hobbyists and Students: They can create limited distribution accounts to share apps with 20 devices.
- Power Users: One key highlight is that power users can install apps from any source. Advanced flow can be used for sideloading unregistered apps or with the ADB.
Here is the timeline of the new system, the advanced flow for side loading rollout by Google:
Timeline and Availability:
- April 2026: The Android Developer Verifier will be seen on Android devices.
- June 2026: Limited access to students and hobbyists.
- August 2026: The sideloading will be launched for users.
- September 2026: The developer verification rules will be live in certain markets, including Singapore, Brazil, Thailand, and Indonesia.
- 2027 Onwards: This new update will be rolled out globally.
The feature is all set to launch in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand by September, whereas the global rollout is expected in 2027. This move clearly signifies Google's efforts to enhance Android security and making it an ideal option for developers to connect.
