YouTube is getting a clearer picture of search. The company is testing a new AI-powered feature called Ask YouTube, designed to transform search into a conversational and interactive experience. It’s about less browsing and more conversation. The feature is in testing and is currently available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the US (aged 18+ and using English on desktop).
How Ask YouTube Transforms Search Experience?
With the Ask YouTube feature, users can ask questions like “plan a trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara” and get step-by-step results. The noteworthy point is that the results not only contain videos but also text, short videos, and longer videos. Users can ask natural-language questions and receive structured AI-generated responses instead of a list of videos.
What’s more, users can ask follow-up questions like, “Where can I get good coffee?” To discover the local stores on your route. As mentioned on their support page, the Ask YouTube feature showcases relevant videos and segments alongside titles and channel information, making it easy to find creators and jump to helpful content.
What’s More with the New AI-Search YouTube Feature?
The “Ask YouTube” button appears in the search bar; you can continue searching here. When you enter a query, the system generates a summary response, highlighting a primary video with a timestamped section, alongside displaying additional related long-form videos and shorts. As mentioned above, the feature also supports follow-up questions within the same thread, allowing for a deeper conversation.
Responses can also include comparison tables and contextual suggestions, such as nearby places or related topics.
Google is pushing its AI mode search across platforms beyond YouTube. Unlike AI summaries in Google Search, AI Mode, and Ask YouTube, which primarily focus on guided interactions to understand user needs better. YouTube is also working on bringing the feature to non-Premium subscribers in the future.
