Well, OpenAI is booming by introducing new things in the AI market. Recently, OpenAI gave a teaser on X Twitter via a livestream video and later shared a follow-up post that unveiled more about the big announcement.

OpenAI has officially rolled out a significant update to ChatGPT in the form of a new Agent Mode, allowing the chatbot to ‘think’ and ‘act’ on behalf of users. The agent uses its virtual computer to handle complex, action-based requests. This represents a significant effort by tech giants to make things interactive and facilitate easy online tasks.
The new feature will now be available for Pro, Plus, and Team users, who can activate ChatGPT’s agentic capabilities through the tools dropdown by selecting agent mode in the conversation.
A Solid Combination: OpenAI’s Operator and Deep Research Tools
Let’s understand the capabilities of this agentic system. It operates on a unified agentic architecture, combining the strengths of OpenAI’s Operator and Deep Research tools, as well as ChatGPT’s intelligence. The Operator tool enables browsing and interacting with websites, while the Deep Research tool synthesizes information online, including video outlines and more. Agent Mode allows ChatGPT to shift seamlessly between reasoning and acting, which can now occur on a self-contained virtual computer.
Here’s the new Agent Mode explained with an example, users can now ask ChatGPT requests such as, “Look at my calendar for client meetings in the future and provide a summary of the client's news partners," "Plan a meal and buy ingredients for a Japanese breakfast for four people," and "Get information on three competitors and make a slide deck," shared in the recent OpenAI’s blog post.
Additionally, it can deliver spreadsheets, prepare slideshows, navigate websites, and perform many other tasks.
ChatGPT agent is an “important step forward” in making ChatGPT ideal for not only answering questions but also performing tasks for users in the real world, stated Kevin Weil, OpenAI's chief product officer.
Focus on User Control
Regarding user control and safety, OpenAI goes above and beyond. ChatGPT will first request permission before executing actions with consequences, and users can interrupt, oversee, or stop the tasks at any time. To get started with the agents, describe your tasks, such as conducting research, creating a slideshow, or submitting expenses.
Alongside this, the system is designed to refuse high-risk tasks, such as executing bank transfers. It restricts access to certain types of personal data unless it’s required for a particular task.
The rollout of Agent Mode is indeed a tough race between the AI players in the industry. Big tech giants are working on developing AI agents that can handle internet interactions seamlessly and reduce the need for manual human work, such as switching apps and conducting research.
