New Android App Informs You When Anyone Nearby is Wearing Smart Glasses

If you are concerned about whether someone is catching up or recording you without your consent, the newly launched app is for you. Recently, an independent, hobbyist developer, Yves Jeanreanaud, developed a new Android app called Nearby Glasses.

      How does Nearby Glasses Work?

The app mainly scans the distinct Bluetooth Low Energy signals, advertising frames emitted by smart glasses. It immediately sends a push alert if there are any potential pair of glasses nearby. Currently, it can detect wearables such as Meta, Ray-Ban smart glasses, and Snap Spectacles.

Jeanrenaud says the project is a form of “resistance” against always-on surveillance tech. With stalkers increasingly using smart glasses to harass people, the developer introduced the app to stay ahead of modern surveillance.

The Nearby Glasses app does not block devices or interfere with them; instead, it scans advertising frames, tiny Bluetooth beacons that aid in pairing, syncing, and alerting users when it detects a match from manufacturers. The notable point is that users can manually add Bluetooth identifiers, expanding their detection capabilities.

      The Security Concerns

However, the app raises concerns about camera-based eyewear blending into everyday life. Reports have suggested stopping the use of devices in sensitive spaces, such as courtrooms and medical settings.

Jeanrenaud, the developer behind the application, stated during his conversation with 404 Media, “It’s a technical solution to a social problem (amplified by technology), and it won’t go away anytime soon.”

The app is currently available on Android through Google Play and GitHub. Knowing who is wearing smart glasses and capturing you without your consent is now possible with this new wearable AI innovation.
