Meta is planning to bring a paid, and optional subscription feature, WhatsApp Plus, that gives users access to exclusive features on WhatsApp for a small monthly fee. The main aim is to offer personalized messaging with additional features without disturbing the app’s core experience.
The everyday standard features, such as messaging, calling, status updates, and more, remain the same and free. It is currently available to a limited set of Android beta users and is expected to roll out to iOS devices and other platforms later.
As the feature is optional, users who do not subscribe will continue with the same WhatsApp. Additionally, it is available on WhatsApp Messenger, not on the WhatsApp Business app.
Premium Features Included with WhatsApp Plus
Here are the features users get with a WhatsApp Plus subscription.
- Users can send premium stickers with special effects
- Select unique app themes and icons to personalize your WhatsApp
- Ability to pin up to 20 chats, wherein 3 are limited in the free version
- Premium ringtones and notification sound for calls and messages
- Custom lists and alerts to organize your chats properly
Importantly, the subscription is entirely optional and does not remove ads or unlock critical functionality. Instead, it offers cosmetic and organizational upgrades, similar to models like Snapchat+.
Pricing and Availability
This plan is optional, and users can access the features by paying a small monthly fee. If the plan is available, you will get the option to subscribe, as stated by WPBetaInfo. The plan might cost:
- €2.49per month in Europe
- 229 PKR (~$0.82) in Pakistan
- $29.00 per month in Mexico
- One-month free trial for some users
Eligibility Criteria for WhatsApp Plus:
To get started with WhatsApp Plus, users need to meet the following requirements:
- Should have an active account on WhatsApp Messenger
- The phone numbers should be from a country where WhatsApp Plus is available
It can be accessed under Settings > Subscriptions > WhatsApp Plus, the messenger, as mentioned in the company’s blog post.
Billing and Renewal Policy
WhatsApp Plus follows a monthly subscription with automatic renewal unless canceled. Users can bill on the same date each month as their original purchase date. To avoid charges, users should cancel the subscription at least 24 hours before going through Google Play.
While the feature is in early testing, it clearly reflects Meta’s approach to bringing paid features while maintaining the app’s simplicity and its global user base of over 3 billion. It is currently available to a few users and will be available to more accounts in the weeks ahead.
