      Hyperlinks in Search Ad

Google to Introduce Anchor Text Hyperlinks in Search Ad Descriptions? Test in Progress

Google is testing a new search advertising feature that could change how users interact with paid search results. The tech giant has been spotted displaying clickable anchor text hyperlinks within search ad descriptions. It allows selected words or phrases inside an advertisement to act as additional navigation links. The experiment appears to be limited, and Google has not officially announced a wider rollout or confirmed whether the feature will be permanent.

The test was first highlighted by PPC marketer Nayan Prakash, who shared examples showing ad descriptions containing linked phrases instead of plain text. He shared on LinkedIn, “Google appears to be testing hyperlinks inside the ad description. Not the headline. Not sitelinks. Actual words inside the copy.

      Google Tests Hyperlinks

What do Anchor Text Hyperlinks in Search Ad Descriptions Mean?

Traditionally, Google Search ads include headlines, descriptions, display URLs, and optional assets such as sitelinks. In the recent test, Google is embedding hyperlinks directly into the descriptive copy of an advertisement. Advertisers may eventually see important keywords and product-related phrases, within the description, become clickable, rather than relying only on dedicated sitelink extensions.

The anchor text hyperlinks in Search ads appear below the ad headline and direct users to specific pages within the advertiser’s website, giving searchers another way to reach relevant content directly from the ad. As Prakash finds, the link navigates to the same landing page as the main ad URL. Additionally, the linked phrases or words are likely to be chosen depending on what the person searched for.

Reportedly, the feature is currently visible only to a small group of users, indicating that Google is evaluating its effectiveness before making any wider deployment decisions.

Potential Benefits to Advertisers and Users:

Advertisers could gain another opportunity to improve user engagement if Google decides on a broader rollout of the feature. Clickable anchor text may help guide searchers toward product categories, pricing pages, service details, or other high-intent destinations without requiring additional ad assets.

On the other hand, the update could make advertisements easier to navigate for users while highlighting the most relevant information within the ad copy itself. Searchers may be able to reach the exact section they need with a single click instead of visiting a general landing page.

However, as with many Google Search experiments, there is no assurance that the anchor text hyperlinks in Search ad descriptions will reach all advertisers. The company frequently tests interface changes with limited audiences before deciding whether to expand, modify, or discontinue them based on user feedback and performance data.
